On March 20-21, 2023, invited by Professor Pan Fusheng, Professor Karl Ulrich Kainer from the University of Hamburg visited CCMg. Professor Pan Fusheng is the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, chairman of the International Mg Society, chairman of the Chongqing Science and Technology Association, vice chairman of the Chinese Materials Research Society, and honorary director of the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys (CCMg). Professor Karl Ulrich Kainer is the formerly Director of the Institute of Materials Science and Technology of the Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany, director of the Magnesium Innovation Center, former chairman of the International Magnesium Association.
On the morning of March 20, Professor Kainer gave a lecture on the theme of advanced materials as a part of a series lectures of G-Seminar. The lecture was jointly held by International Cooperation and Exchange Office of Chongqing University, the College of Materials Science and Engineering of Chongqing University and the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys. An academic report titled "Future of Magnesium Alloys as Structural Materials and Potential New Areas of Application" was made in Room 319 of CCMg, Chongqing University. The report was chaired by Professor Jiang Bin, executive deputy director of CCMg. More than 40 teachers and graduate students from the College of Materials Science and Engineering of Chongqing University attended the meeting.
Professor Chen Houwen, deputy dean of the College of Materials Science and Engineering of Chongqing University, warmly welcomed Professor Kainer, and looked forward to his continuous support for the development of College of Materials Science and Engineering . In the report, Professor Kainer reviewed the development and application status of magnesium alloys and other light metals in the automotive industry, and made some suggestions on the potential, challenges and new developments of magnesium alloys in the transportation industry, as well as the application prospects of magnesium materials in the field of energy storage. Professor Kainer's high-level academic report aroused the strong interest and eager attention from the participating teachers and students. Professor Jiang Bin, executive deputy director of the center, made important summaries and comments on the report. Expecting Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht, Germany carry out more in-depth exchanges and cooperation with Chongqing University to extend application field of magnesium alloy and promote the development of magnesium alloys. The academic activity ended successfully with a burst of applause.
On the afternoon of March 20, accompanied by Associate Professor Li Tian and Dr. Yang Hong from CCMg, Professor Kainer visited Chongqing Millison Technology Co., Ltd. Millison first introduced the company's background, positioning and development goals. Then, under the leadership of engineers, they visited the company's 7000-ton and 8800-ton ultra-large intelligent die-casting machines and large-scale smelting equipment. Finally, Millison discussed with Professor Kainer about the possibility of using magnesium alloys instead of aluminum alloys to produce super-large integrated floor parts, as well as the possible problems of magnesium alloys had to face in applications. The cooperation on magnesium alloys was also discussed.
Professor Kainer is an internationally famous expert on magnesium alloys. He was served as the chairman of the International Magnesium Association and has important international influence. Professor Kainer has organized and participated in many international conferences in the field of magnesium alloys, and has served as a fund review expert in Germany, Austria, Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Norway, the United Kingdom and other countries. He specializes in the research of creep-resistant magnesium alloys, and has deep knowledge in the microstructure characterization of magnesium alloys, corrosion behavior and surface treatment of magnesium alloys.
