From November 2nd to 6th, 2024, the 2024 International Conference on Magnesium Week, comprising the 8th International Conference on Magnesium (ICM 8) and the 13th International Conference on Magnesium Alloys and their Applications (Mg 2024) were successfully held in Chongqing, China. The conference was co-sponsoring by the International Mg Society and Journal of Magnesium and Alloys, and co-hosted by Chongqing University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Guiyun Chen, vice chairman of Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference, Fusheng Pan, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, chairman of Chongqing Association for Science and Technology and chairman of the conference, Baorong Hou, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Enhou Han, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Alan Luo, Academician of American Academy of Engineering, Jian Lu, Academician of French National Academy of Technology, Zhengxiao Guo and Javier LLorca, Academician of European Academy of Sciences, Kwang Seon Shin, Member, the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, and 11 Academicians such as Shixue Dou, Huakun Liu and Zaiping Guo, Academician of Australian Academy of Technology Science and Engineering, and Yedong Feng, deputy secretary of party committee of Chongqing University, participated in the conference. The conference set up 10 parallel sessions, with more than 1200 representatives from 22 countries and regions participated in the conference.

Conference Chairman Academician Fusheng Pandelivering the opening address
On the afternoon of November 4, the International Mg Society (IMS) International Standards Expert Review Meeting and Standard System Construction Work Discussion Meeting were held. Attendees included Fusheng Pan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and Chairman of the IMS, Enhou Han, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Guangdong Institute of Corrosion Science and Technology, Rongmei Fan, Director of Standardization Department of Chongqing Administration for Market Regulation, attended the meeting. More than 80 representatives from over 30 domestic and international organizations involved in standardization work participated in the meeting. The meeting issued the first three IMS standards, which officially opened the three-dimensional and multi-dimensional service mission of the IMS for the global magnesium industry, including standard guidance, standardization services, standard system support, and NQI integration.

Concurrently with the conference, the 2024 International Editorial Board Meeting of the Journal of Magnesium and Alloys (JMA) was held. A total of 98 editors and young editorial board members from eight countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Germany, the Czech Republic, Australia, Japan, and China, attended the meeting. Academician Fusheng Pan, Editor-in-Chief of JMA, attended the meeting and delivered a welcome speech. The meeting was chaired by Professor Xiaodong Peng, Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the journal. Professor Yan Yang, Executive Deputy Director of the Editorial Department, reported on the development of JMA over the past year. Academician Enhou Han, Alan A. Luo, Professor Yoshihito Kawamura, Yuansheng Yang, Academician Zhengxiao Guo and Professor Nack J. Kim expressed warm congratulations on the achievements of the journal. They engaged in in-depth discussions on how to further enhance the academic quality of JMA, expand its international influence, and better serve the industry, offering constructive suggestions. Finally, Academician Fusheng Pan concluded the meeting by thanking all the editors and youth editors for their long-term strong support to JMA, and made specific arrangements for the journal's key tasks in the future.

On the afternoon of November 5, the New Era Magnesium Materials Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration Forum was held concurrently during the conference. The forum was chaired by Professor Bin Jiang of Chongqing University and Researcher Weineng Tang of Baosteel Metal Co., Ltd.. Presentations were delivered by Professor Zhiwei Shan, Vice President of Xi’an Jiaotong University, Professor Huiyuan Wang, Vice President of Hebei University of Technology, Kai Guo, Deputy Head of Kongtong District, Pingliang City, Gansu Province, Professor Liming Peng of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Hai Zhou, Assistant Department Head of Digital Simulation at Seres Vehicle Technology Platform. They shared insights on industry-academia-research collaborations in the field of magnesium, involving institutions such as the Pingliang District Government of Gansu Province, Chongqing University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Hebei University of Technology, as well as enterprises including Baowu Magnesium and Seres Automobile. The meeting featured in-depth discussions on the development of magnesium alloys and the magnesium industry.
The 2024 National Excellent PhD Student Forum on Magnesium Materials took place alongside the conference and was live-streamed on platforms such as “JMACCMg,” “Research Cloud,” and “Koushare,” attracting over 18,000 viewers. It was convened by Professor Yan Yang, Professor Zhihua Dong, and Associate Professor Jia She from Chongqing University, Professor Xiaojun Wang from Harbin Institute of Technology, Professor Hucheng Pan from Northeastern University, Professor Min Zha from Jilin University, and Professor Yujuan Wu from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Ten outstanding doctoral students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Chongqing University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Jilin University, Zhejiang University, Northeastern University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Southwest Jiaotong University, and Taiyuan University of Technology delivered presentations. Their reports covered research areas such as structural magnesium alloys, corrosion and protection of magnesium alloys, and magnesium-based energy storage materials. The forum attracted numerous faculty members and students in the field of magnesium and magnesium alloys, sparking lively discussions. The participating students also reported gaining valuable insights from the event.

The successful hosting of this International Conference on Magnesium Week has injected new vitality into academic exchanges, talent cultivation, the development of international publications, industry-academia-research collaboration, and the establishment of industry standards in the field of magnesium materials. It has not only greatly facilitated the exchange of ideas and academic discussions within the magnesium community but has also significantly strengthened cooperation and interaction among universities, research institutes, and enterprises. This event has provided an important platform for in-depth collaboration and innovative development in the global magnesium sector. The conference has effectively enhanced the influence of Chongqing and Chongqing University in both the global magnesium industry and academia.
