On November 3rd, 2024, the 2024 International Magnesium Week, the 8th International Conference on Magnesium (ICM 8), and the 13th International Conference on Magnesium Alloys and their Applications officially opened in Chongqing.The event is co-hosted by the International Magnesium Society (IMS) and the Journal of Magnesium and Alloys (JMA), and co-organized by Chongqing University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. More than 1,200 delegates from 22 countries attended, making it the largest international conference in the history of the magnesium industry.
Guiyun Chen, Vice Chairman of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference（CPPCC）; Fusheng Pan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE), Chairman of the Chongqing Association for Science and Technology, and Chairman of this conference; Baorong Hou, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Enhou Han, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Alan Luo, Academician of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering; Jian Lu, Academician of the French Academy of Technologies, Zhengxiao Guo and Javier Llorca, Academicians of the European Academy of Science, Kwang Seon Shin, Member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea; Shixue Dou, Huakun Liu, and Zaiping Guo, Academicians of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Yedong Feng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Chongqing University; and other leaders and guests participated in this conference. This conference was attended by 11 academicians from around the world and more than 1,200 representatives from 22 countries and regions, providing an important exchange platform for the scientific development of the global magnesium field. The opening ceremony was presided over by Academician Enhou Han.
Academician Fusheng Pan delivered an opening speech, reviewing the development process of the International Conference on Magnesium and the International Conference on Magnesium Alloys and their Applications, and looking forward to the prospects of the magnesium industry. Yedong Feng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Chongqing University, delivered a speech on behalf of the organizer and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the guests. He stated that Chongqing University has unique characteristics in the field of magnesium alloys, has achieved outstanding results, produced a number of landmark achievements with independent intellectual property rights, and founded the world’s only professional journal on magnesium alloys, the Journal of Magnesium and Alloys. Guiyun Chen, Vice Chairman of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the CPPCC, delivered a speech on behalf of Chongqing and warmly welcomed the participating experts and scholars. Chongqing has built the world’s largest magnesium alloy platform—the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys, created the world’s first magnesium alloy journal, and achieved a number of internationally advanced and leading technological results.
Due to their low density, high specific strength, and many excellent properties, magnesium and magnesium alloys have been increasingly applied in the automotive, aerospace, electronic information, energy, medical, and construction industries, and have attracted wide attention from academia and industry. This conference aimed to further accelerate the research and development of magnesium and magnesium alloys, and to promote the wider application of magnesium alloys, new products, and new technologies. During the conference, the 2024 International Magnesium Science and Technology Award ceremony was also to be organized to commend institutions and individuals who have made important contributions in the field of magnesium and magnesium alloys.
